The tradition of giving students essays or longer writing assignments at home is changing in America. The reason for this is AI. A large number of students have now started using AI for homework and writing related work. Due to this, teachers have reduced the writing assignments given at home and have increased the emphasis on making students write in class. Teachers say that in the era of AI, it has become very difficult to find out whether the work written at home has actually been done by the student or by the chatbot. Therefore, many institutions have almost stopped sending long writing assignments home. Now students are being made to write in the classroom, under the supervision of the teacher, by hand or on a laptop. In a survey of 400 high school and college teachers conducted by The New York Times, almost all of them agreed that generative AI has changed the way they teach and teach writing. Many teachers have now begun to emphasize writing that reflects students’ personal reactions, individual thinking, and understanding of class material, things that are considered difficult for AI to produce. Chatbots can now write articles on any topic, analyze legal decisions in seconds. Teachers classify many such uses as copying. Another concern is that the practice of writing with pen and pencil among today’s teenagers is decreasing, which is affecting handwriting and basic writing skills. Jessica Binney, a teacher at John Jay High School in New York City, has changed her approach. He has stopped giving three to five page essays at home. Now students write essays in class, often on laptops with closed browsers. Teachers say that this change has brought them relief. Many schools and universities are again adopting the method of writing on paper. Concern – Use of AI in homework increased by 14 percent in a year. The use of AI among American students has increased rapidly since last year. The percentage of middle school, high school and college students who regularly use AI in homework increased from 48 to 62 between May and December 2025. One third of the students said that technology has harmed their learning skills. One-third of students have reported using AI in drafting or rewriting.
