Pt. Vijayshankar Mehta’s column: If we are egoistic then we are harming ourselves.

Many things have been said in our scriptures in different ways regarding ego. Pride is a big obstacle in the path of devotion and pride in the world also ultimately causes trouble. Now Tulsidas ji presents this matter in a new way. He linked pride with tribulations and grief: Sansrit Mool Soolprad Nana, Sakal Sok Dayak Abhimana – Pride is the origin of the world in the form of birth and death and is the cause of many types of tribulations and all sorrows. There are five types of afflictions – Avidya, Asmita, Raga, Dvesha and Abhinivesha. They cause pain to humans. That is why an arrogant person is never found calm. His ego keeps him trembling and restless from within, even if he pretends to be calm from outside. Similarly, mourning is a human reaction to the pain that arises in the mind. So the message of Tulsidas ji is that if we are egoistic then we are harming ourselves.
