Indian-American software entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy does not try to hide his Hindu identity. Last week he won the Republican Party’s nomination for governor of Ohio. In Ohio, the Republican Party controls both houses of the state legislature, the governor’s office, and all major government institutions. In American politics, the stature of the Governor is like that of a Chief Minister of India. It is not that Ramaswamy will be the first Indian-origin governor of an American state. Before this, Bobby Jindal had been the Governor of Louisiana and Nikki Haley of South Carolina. But Ramaswami is different from both of them. Jindal converted to Christianity and changed his name to Bobby instead of Piyush to increase his acceptance in the white Christian American community. Haley, born as Nimrat Randhawa to Sikh parents in South Carolina, also left Sikhism and converted to Christianity. In contrast, Ramaswamy is proud of his Hindu background. He proudly takes the name of his wife Apoorva and sons Karthik and Arjun. Like Jindal and Haley, Ramaswamy was American-born, but he did not try to Americanize his children’s names or change their Hindu connotations. Despite adopting Christianity, Jindal and Haley could not progress much in American politics. Will Ramaswamy succeed in this? Ramaswamy faces greater social and political challenges today than Jindal and Haley. President Trump has brought racism and white supremacy into the mainstream. Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ or ‘MAGA’ supporter base is made up of less educated and unemployed Americans who fear that Indian and Chinese immigrants are taking away their jobs. While campaigning in Ohio, Ramaswamy faced so much racist hatred online that he stopped using his Instagram and ‘X’ accounts. This account is now updated by his team. The language used against immigrants by the Trump administration has further fueled this toxic environment in America. In his second term, Trump made Ramaswamy the co-head of ‘DOGE’ (Department of Government Efficiency) along with Elon Musk. But soon there was a conflict between the two. Musk, who was born and raised in South Africa during the apartheid era, does not consider himself a racist, but his own ‘X’ handle is full of posts related to white supremacy and saving western civilization. In an article written in “The New York Times” on hateful and racist rhetoric in America, Ramaswamy said that there are two views now emerging on the American right, both of which are contradictory. According to one view, American identity is based on lineage, blood and soil, where inherited identity is what matters most. According to this thinking, the purest Americans are those whose ancestral roots go back to America’s founding or even earlier. He said that crafting a white-centric identity is something This was already anticipated by him in his book ‘Nation of Victims’. But in the last five years, this is no longer an ideology of the non-whites. Despite this, today you believe in the rule of law, freedom of expression and the constitution of Ohio. It will be a big challenge for Ramaswamy to win. The latest polls show that Ramaswamy is getting 47% support. Till a year ago, this support could have been in favor of Ramaswamy. Only 30% people have supported him. (These are the author’s own views)
