Pt. Vijayshankar Mehta’s column: Keep doing devotion, God likes prayer, not demonstration.

The mystery of where Kabir went in his last moments remained in the flowers only. No idol is able to tell where Meera disappeared. We have many examples of how a devotee becomes absorbed in God. Pilgrimage and temples can be the first step towards devotion. After that you are free. Even if you don’t visit any temple or set foot on any pilgrimage in your life, devotion can flourish. Now our new generation, their way of worshiping will be different. In the last 50 years, church going people in America have decreased by 20%. The old churches there were locked. At the same time, new arrangements are being given to old temples in India. Big corridors are being built. A huge crowd is coming. Celebrations and festivals are being celebrated in such a way that only the glory of God and the excitement of the devotees are visible. Devotion cannot be found by searching. It is a good thing that temples should be maintained. But they should not become the center of tourism, entertainment or election agenda. Kabir and Meera have taught – God likes prayer, not demonstration.
