Barkha Dutt – Founding Editor Mojo Story.
Twisha Sharma was a former model who was found dead under suspicious circumstances in the house of her mother-in-law and former district judge Giribala Singh. Twisha’s husband Samarth Singh – a lawyer by profession and had absconded soon after Twisha’s death – and Giribala are now in CBI custody.
But more and more evidence is emerging to believe that this is not the story of a woman committing suicide due to dowry demands. Hard facts continue to indicate that Twisha’s death was likely the result of a violent attack.
Giribala Singh’s unusual anxiety about obtaining CCTV footage of the crime scene indicates that perhaps he had something to hide. The CCTV technician who installed the cameras at her residence confirmed that she was keen to secure footage of the incident. Why did such a thought come to his mind just a few hours after his daughter-in-law’s death? This should be a matter of interest to the police.
The matter was not limited to the cameras installed inside the house only. The most serious indictment against Giribala comes from the beauty parlor where Twisha was last seen on the day of her death. Twisha looks clearly comfortable in this video. The parlor manager also told us in an interview that she showed no obvious signs of anxiety or stress.
The parlor manager also confirmed that Giribala called her the next day and asked her several questions to find out how Twisha had paid her bills. And most importantly, Giribala wanted to know if there were CCTV cameras installed in the parlor, and she wanted to get that footage.
Soon after, a group of lawyers reached the parlor and started demanding its operator to hand over the footage to them. This was not only illegal, but it also revealed Giribala’s desperation. Did she want to take possession of the parlor CCTV footage because the images of a calm and composed Twisha would contradict her claims of suicide? The timeline also does not match the suicide plot.
Twisha’s family has shared call records with me, which show that her last phone conversation with her parents was at 10.05 pm on the day of her death. Samarth claims that Twisha hanged herself at 10.20 pm. If the in-laws’ claim that she committed suicide by hanging herself from an exercise ring is to be believed, then it is not an immediate act that can be carried out in a period of just 15 minutes.
The CBI is now using a structure weighing 80 kg to investigate whether the ring could bear that much weight or not. The initial mistakes made by the police in this case are also shocking. They indicate not only carelessness but also interference from influential contacts. The fact that Giribala got anticipatory bail even before Twisha’s family filed the FIR speaks volumes.
During the first post-mortem process, the police did not even provide the ring which Twisha had allegedly used to hang herself. Senior police officers have told me that this cannot be considered a mere mistake. Twisha’s family lawyer has also raised the question – Is a fair trial possible without a fair investigation? In a private audio recording made by Twisha’s family before her death, Giribala is allegedly heard using abusive and obscene language towards his daughter-in-law.
It is believed that the first post-mortem report was influenced and possibly even manipulated. Twisha’s sister-in-law, Dr. Rashi Abrol, has revealed in her recorded statement to me that during the first post-mortem, Giribala’s sister – herself a doctor – was present in the room where the post-mortem was being conducted. This was a clear violation of rules and procedures. No satisfactory explanation has been given yet for the seven injuries found on Twisha’s body.
Giribala and his son tried to claim that these injuries were caused while bringing the body down the stairs from the roof, but it has now been established that all these injuries were caused before death. This fact gives rise to the suspicion that Twisha was attacked before her death, and it is possible that the same attack may have caused her death. Giribala’s influential local contacts have given rise to suspicions that there may have been a large-scale cover-up in the case.
- In fact, there are so many contradictions in this matter and so many obvious attempts to hide the facts that a mountain of unanswered questions stands before us. It has now become very important for justice to get to the bottom of all these questions.
